Remixes

Hmm, it's strange but life as a bum seems to be way busier than one of a corporate slave. There's no time or any thoughts to blog about. I reckon when you are working. You tend to slack off all the time.

That could be me. Heh.

Just completed the Stellarium remix with a final mixdown and mastered it at The Love Studios aka Woei Yuan's studyroom. Sounds pretty fun. Azman liked the I / D remix we did so he asked if we could do one for Stellarium.

So now he owes me one! Yeah, a remix.

So far, it's pretty fun doing all these stuff. It's like playing with Lego. Using the bricks and forming a whole new structure. With additional bricks from some other sets at times.

Nice. Still have the Analog Girl and Plainsunset ones to go. The album is still in stagnation for recording. Hopefully, that's all done.

Maybe, I'd just pack it up after both projects end.

Galaxie 500 - Ceremony (live)

In my never-ending quest to embarass myself and my friends musically, I've always sought to find some new music (or stuff I like) to ape. As some of you guys might know, me and some of the boys formed a nonsensical shoegazing band called Galactica a few months.

We wrote and recorded a few tunes on the spot for the fun of it, releasing the (intentionally, we hope people could tell) badly recorded and mixed EP Galactica Lives!.

Barring that there will be time (and money), we will like to carry on with this nonsense and do a follow-up EP. However, being the "consummate" artists we are, I believe we should keep evolving... Ahem, yeah, so instead of doing more early 90's British shoegazing rock, we will mine the late 90's American slow-core movement.

I love Low who I mentioned to Bryan. He digs the mp3s I've sent over. Interestingly, he reminded me of an old 80's (now defunct) American act Galaxie 500 which he said are pretty much the pioneers of the whole slow-core genre. Atmospheric and very sluggish in nature.

He's right.

So I'm revisiting all my Galaxie 500 CDs right now. That's the Bostonian band covering Joy Division's 'Ceremony'. Interesting trivia: They were actually friends with talkshow host Conan O'Brien when they were all undergrads in Harvard. I love Wikipedia.

Pulp - This Is Hardcore (live)

Wooo, nice live version.

Pulp got to release this as the first single off This Is Hardcore cause Radiohead released a highly successful sprawling single also known as 'Paranoid Android' the year before in 1997. This didn't do as well as expected.

Could be the fact that frontman Jarvis Cocker is not really a singer than an observant exhibitionist. Could be the issue that the song draws an allegory between his personal demons and all the porn movies he watched in the hotels the band stayed during their European tour.

I love this tune anyway. Great stuff. Lovely and underrated album too.

The Burning Plain trailer

The Burning Plain is both written and directed by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo Arriaga, who worked with and wrote Alejandro González Iñárritu's trilogy of Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel, as well as the screenplays for The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and The Night Buffalo. The film first premiered at the Venice Film Festival late last year and has played at other major film festivals ever since then. Magnolia Pictures will be bringing The Burning Plain to very limited theaters starting on September 18th this year.

I've missed 'Babel' which I heard was really good but I've enjoyed watching '21 Grams'. This looks pretty decent too.

Freebass are a Manchester band consisting of three bassists Andy Rourke (formerly of The Smiths), Peter Hook (formerly of Joy Division and New Order) and Gary "Mani" Mounfield (formerly of The Stone Roses and currently in Primal Scream), singer Gary Briggs (formerly of Haven), drums Paul Kehoe, programming / tour management Phil Murphy.

Big Star - Thank You Friends

Most people know their song but don't really know the band. They were one of the proto (or pioneer) power pop bands. Really good stuff. Alex Chilton and Chris Bell were like the Lennon-McCartney songwriting team of the 70's American rock scene but without the fame and money.

Their song 'In The Street' was recorded by Cheap Trick as the theme song to 'That 70's Show'. You can watch that here. Much of the original band members have left so Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer from The Posies augmented the band back in 1993. I love this tune 'September Gurls' and this version is a cover by Susanna Hoff's The Bangles.

Bon Jovi

2 good friends of mine are getting married next year. Well, they already are but this is for their traditional wedding banquet. I don't really think I should reveal their identities yet but they are running a small indie label here. Ahem. That should give it away pretty much.

In any case, they are thinking of doing a small rock music festival as their wedding dinner. And it will be held in an open air area (Fingers crossed). How fuckin' cool is that? If the boys and I were ever invited to perform, I've promised the bride that we will do a Bon Jovi cover.

Now, I really dislike Bon Jovi. I know Noel is a huge fan. But they are a really boring band. Their music sound exactly the same but yeah, some tunes are guilty pleasures. Jon Bon Jovi makes no apologies for being a pretty bad lyricist. I mean, check out the first line of 'It's My Life': "This is a song for the broken-hearted". You can't get more straightforward than that. The fucker states the mission statement of the tune in the first line!

It got me thinking that if we were to perform a Bon Jovi song, which one should we do? Hmmm... These are my choices. What would be yours?

Galactica Lives!

Me and the guys (aka Robin, Woei Yuan, Yeeyong and Bryan) came up with an idea for a joke. We decided to form a band to write and record a short shoegazing EP within a day. We went to a pretty crap studio (we only found out how bad it really was when we were there) to do a live recording.

There was only a fuckin' track for the drums. Typically, there should be a few .wav tracks for the hi-hat, kick drum and cymbals. Well, I cheated; I pre-programmed the kick drum. So the band was reasonably tight. Hey, those can't drum, program the beats. So I played only the cymbals, snare and toms. Heh.

It was fun. Robin did lead vocals on all tunes. They were mainly inspired by our beloved space opera series BattleStar Galactica and Max who served as our muse most of the time for our nonsensical lyrics.

It was really fun. We talked about going back (not to the same crappy studio) to do a sequel to this joke. That'll be probably be the end of the year. If so, I will suggest the next 3 song titles: 'So That Was The Frakkin' Plan? They Never Told Me!', 'I Just Rammed BattleStar Galactica Into The Cylon Basestar. Woot!' and 'We Are The Final Five'. We probably should cover Bob Dylan's 'All Along The Watchtower' as well since it was the trigger tune for all the Final Five Cylons. Hmmm..

You know what, Max...

With the extremely great help of Firdaus whose photo blog you can check out here, we did a photoshoot to submit an official photo for our upcoming show at the Esplanade Concourse in August.

Max followed us and became the default choreographer for us. So, instead of showing us in action, here are some shots of him doing the poses to demonstrate what we should be doing in the shot.

Max: "Dude, you know what? Let's try to channel your inner Westlife and Take That. Think Gary Barlow man!" I'm not joking; he said that.

And look carefully, you can see the $2 purple bill in his left breast pocket.

Max: "Follow me, guys. Do the Blue Steel like Ben Stiller in Zoolander!"

Max: "Ehhhh, you know what, guys?"

Us: "What?"

Max: "You should do a pensive shot where you look away, deep in thought. Chicks dig that kinda stuff..."

This is a candid shot. Well, Max feels very right at home. Hmmm...

And this is my personal favourite. The weather was insane on Sunday noon. Firdaus was a trooper and followed us around. Well, all of us were drenched to our undies since we were wearing suits and all. And our make-up (yes, we were dolled up. Weiyuan was gunning for the Robert Pattinson vampire look in Twilight) were running down our faces.

Even though Max was not in most of the shots, he was drenched to the bone in perspiration. His white shirt was particularly thin and his extremely brown nipple was peeping through the wet shirt.

So this was us doing a tribute to his right brown nipple and him striking a pose for a GQ cover.

Her sophomore album It's Not Me, It's You is alright (ahem) at best. Some friends really love it. But you can't deny all the videos which have been released are fantastic. Apparently, the song bashes George W. Bush and his homophobia (besides his glaring lack of foreign diplomacy).

Yeah, the song's kinda cute but Pet Shop Boys did it better with "I'm With Stupid" (sans vulgarity as well).

Photoshoot

Hahaha, I love my boys. We are trying to arrange a photoshoot for the new Lard Brothers line-up. Which is based on the current theme is old school 3-D specs. We have difficulties hunting them down. So Yeeyong was tasked to make them. As with the job brief by Weiyuan who said, "I want it to look like we are appearing on the cover of GQ!"

Unpopular Music radio

I'll be joining Charanpal aka DJ Tan(g)kap Accent on his weekly Monday night show 'Black Tan(g)kap Black Show' tonight 22 June 2009. I should be playing some music which is under the Aging Youth label.

I've absolutely no idea what to expect. Well, I pitched to him to let me and Weiyuan do a segment to promote the Lard Brothers' remix album which we have renamed The Super Lard Bros OST. Complete with a concept for the album sleeve. We are meeting a friend who is helping us design the cover and a bit of the interior artwork on Wednesday.

In any case, I really need to get that stuff outta the system. We are done with the remixes and it's up to Weiyuan to mix it down. We should be able to put it up for free download on National Day again.

Anyway, Charanpal asked me to join him for his last show ever. He's flying over to Australia to do his Ph.D. in a week's time. The Lard Brothers should be appearing on the internet streaming radio station(?) towards the end of July.

Record Club - Sunday Morning (live)

Somedays, when I wake up, I wish I were Beck Hansen.

Beck has enlisted a group of friends to form the ‘Beck & Friends Music Club’ in which they will re-record entire albums in one-day sessions and post a track a week on Beck.com.

The Record Club will be a regular meeting of various musicians to record an entire album in one day. A single album will be chosen to be covered and used as a framework, with nothing rehearsed or arranged ahead of time.

The intention is to upload one track every week from these sessions to Beck.com, as well as through the websites of those involved in the project.

The first album in the series to be re-worked is ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’.

MGMT, Devendra Banhart, Jamie Lidell and Nigel Godrich have all been enlisted so far to take part in the club.

Thirst trailer

A beloved and devoted priest (Song Kang-ho) from a small town volunteers for a medical experiment which fails and turns him into a vampire. Physical and psychological changes lead to his affair with a wife of his childhood friend who is repressed and tired of her mundane life. The one-time priest falls deeper in despair and depravity. As things turns for worse, he struggles to maintain what's left of his humanity.

Thirst is directed by South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, of Joint Security Area, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, and I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK previously. The screenplay was co-written by Park Chan-wook and his writing partner Jeong Seo-Gyeong. This first hit theaters in Korea back in April. Focus Features will debut Thirst in limited release starting on July 31st.

I love Park Chan-wook's JSA which was one of the best shows I've ever watched. Absolutely touching show about a country torn apart. Lee Byung-Hun (who was excellent in the show and is unfortunately starring as Storm Shadow in Stephen Sommers' 'G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra') and Song Kang-ho were in it. Song kicked major ass in the monster flick 'The Host'. If you haven't watched it before, you owe it to yourself to see it.

Who Lards The Lard Brothers?

A month ago, Max came in to record the song he co-wrote with us 2 years ago. It's our tribute to Pet Shop Boys. So far, we have gotten quite a few people to work on and contribute to it. For a song which is simultaneously a homage and parody, we sure are putting a lotta effort on it.

Nat and Biddy had put their touches on it. Still waiting for Jane and Simon to come in and add their bits.
